Though a series of field studies led by specialists ranging from ecologists to astronomers, Haynes invites visitors to Stereochron Island to reconsider what time actually is. This research project by Cathy Haynes for her Chisenhale Gallery Victoria Park Residency 2013-14 investigates the devices we use to make sense of the world, such as clocks and time maps. Stereochron Island re-imagines Victoria Park as a fictional island state campaigning to liberate itself from the mechanical clock. She is a member of Loop Collective’s Fringe Magnetic, MooV and the hybrid Jazz-Latin-Gallic band Gypsy Dreamers. She has performed with Jamie Cullum, Barb Jungr, appeared on the Jonathan Ross show with Take That, toured with dancer Akram Khan and played at Sydney Opera House. Natalie Rozario is a prize-winning cellist who studied at the Royal Academy of Music. However, for this performance, instead of the birds singing to a human tune, Rozario’s challenge was to perform to theirs. The experiment was inspired by Beatrice Harrison’s cello performances with nightingales, which were broadcast on BBC radio in the 1920s. Rozario was invited to respond to the natural sounds of Stereochron Island at dusk in order to focus our senses on rhythms that are not dictated by the mechanical time of the city.
